SINCE 1991.
FROM HAMBURG.
Dark-Electro · EBM · Industrial — from the early days of the German underground scene to the return with Gated World.

FFormed in the depths of the electronic underground, Fortification 55 continues to produce their music inside the „Vault of Memories“. Rooted in classic synth-pop, which undeniably influenced the later future pop genre, and shaped by darkwave and EBM influences, the project now bridges the gap to modern sounds.
The line-up centres around Björn Petersen and Jan Kruse, two pillars of the early German Dark-Electro and Industrial scene. Their music welds hard electronic beats to melodic synthesizer pads, brooding lyrics and influences from EBM, Synthpop and Industrial. Tracks like Memories, Holy War, Desire and And Tomorrow Atlantis remain fan-favourite classics of melodic Dark-Electro to this day.
As the architect of visions, Jan infuses his deeply-held passion for 80s music and the legendary Italo-disco era into the sound's evolution: a perfect balance between dark, driving club rhythms and melodic elements.
With their signing to the cult label Alfa Matrix, the duo is now opening the next, uncompromising chapter of their history.
Forged in the vault, perfected in sound: every kick defined, every silence weighed.

Every kick forged. Every silence weighed.
Out of the underground — and back.
In 1999, with Yesterday And Tomorrow, a retrospective of the band's most important releases was released. Many years later Fortification 55 is still appreciated in the underground EBM scene, and the music is gaining new attention through streaming, collectors and online communities.
In February 2026, Fortification 55 returned after a 17-year release pause with the single Static Veil. For June 2026 the second single Echoes (Into The Abyss) was announced, before in December 2026 Gated World the first new studio album in many years is to be released. With these releases the band ties in with their classic sound and combines it with modern Dark-Electro and cinematic elements.
